Before you set off on your 4×4 adventure this weekend, make sure you’ve ticked off the following things to ensure that your 4WD trip doesn’t turn into a 4WD disaster. Preparing your vehicle for off-roading as well as having the right 4WD Accessories is essential for your safety and the safety of your passengers when you go off-road.
This checklist of items are things that we strongly recommend that you consider each time you set off on an off-road trip. Being aware of your vehicle, driving conditions, and your skill level are not only essential for ensuring the safety of those around you, but they’re also a sign of respect to the other drivers in your convoy.
Check the basics
Before you head off-road check all of your fluids including coolant, oil, windscreen washer fluid, brake fluid, differential fluid, and engine coolant. Ensure there are no leaks and then everything is at the right level. in case something goes wrong it’s also important to carry extra engine oil and coolant as a minimum. Make sure that you check your air filter box for debris and ensure that your air filter has plenty of life left in it. If your 4WD vehicle has any electrical or mechanical issues make sure that you have them checked before you go away.
Check Your Tires
Depending on the severity of the four-wheel drive track that you are planning on tackling, having the right tyres could be the most important thing in your four-wheel drive arsenal. Make sure that they are at the right pressure and that you have a compressor that can lower the pressure when necessary off-road. Make a note of your tyre tread and assess whether it is going to be appropriate for the terrain that you are tackling.
GPS Navigation
In 2019 there is no excuse not to have a reliable handheld GPS navigation device in your 4×4 tool kit. Prices of come down significantly over the last 5 years to the point where even the occasional 4-wheel driver should be able to justify having one in their car at all times. Handheld GPS devices are simple to operate and will be essential to make sure you reach your Final Destination. For the sake of less than $200 don’t get caught out without a GPS unit in your 4WD.
